The Callaway Speech Team traveled to the Broken Bow Speech Invitational on January 21, 2017, to compete in their first competition of the year. They day was full of competition for the 11 contest pieces that competed. With teams ranging from Class A to D-2, it was a busy day and gave the team a preview of what they will be competing against throughout the year.
In the varsity division, CHS Speakers Olivia Paulsen and Seth Pearson received a sixth place medal with their duet, while in the novice division, Laykin Wilkins received a fifth place medal with her poetry.
Other honors for the Callaway Speech Team were superior ratings of Laykin Wilkins, Novice Poetry; Hannah Pearson, Varsity Informative; Wryleigh Doyle and Hannah Pearson, Varsity Duet; and Olivia Paulsen and Seth Pearson, Varsity Duet.
“This season has had a rough start due to absence, late starts and no school, but our kiddos are working hard and are passionate about what they are creating. This is always such an amazing meet to begin the year,” stated Tina Ord, Callaway Head Coach. “We are able to see some pretty stiff competition and watch our students finally perform what they have been working so hard on. Being against bigger schools that have already been competing, allows us to see some pretty polished work. It is a great experience for our students to compete against these larger schools because it makes a medal even more special, and I am so proud of all of our students for rising to the occasion. Suzi and I have a great team and we have high hopes for what they will achieve during the year.”
Suzi Campbell, Callaway Head Speech Coach, adds, “This being my first year and first competition has been so exciting. Our kids have been working hard and coming in whenever they can to practice. I am so honored to be a part of the speech team and work with such amazing young talents. I am excited to see what this year will bring.”
The Varsity Speech Team Members of the Week are Olivia Paulsen and Seth Pearson. Olivia and Seth have worked so hard to be at the level they were at this weekend. They are fully dedicated to their performance and practiced whenever they had a spare minute. They are a great example for our younger students on what hard work looks like and what they can achieve.
The next regular season speech meet will be the Ord High School Chanticleer Speech Invitational on Saturday, January 28, 2017. Competition will begin at 8:00am.
